If you move away from Big Tech because you want more freedom, transparency and arbitrary platform decisions…

Can (not may) a platform like #Codeberg decide which kinds of projects are welcome?

Or is that the 1st step onto a slippery slope where today’s “obvious” exclusions become tomorrow’s subjective ones?

Where do you draw the line between responsible stewardship and becoming the gatekeeper you wanted to escape? 🤔

@wlaatje my crude understanding is that this hasn't been a top-down decision, rather it was made by members of the assembly and so reflects what users who particpated in the discussion favoured.

Those participating may not be representative of the sentiments of all users though.

Increasingly I think self-hosting everything is the only path to being completely happy with one's tech stack as there will always be compromises.

@nshephard Yes, perhaps the real unique selling point is that you can vote with your feet.

Plus: federation(s) allows communities to connect globally while retaining their own rules, culture and direction locally... in this case, including the freedom to say: no LLM nonsense here. That is not such a bad model after all.

@monkee @wlaatje he lost me at "arbitrary platform decisions" this resolution was coming from the community and voted on by the community. That's the f'ing opposite of an "arbitrary platform decision"
But if you are feeling attacked by a community that uses a democratic process to define their ethical standards you tell a lot about your very own values.

@wlaatje I don’t like this poor take on what Codeberg did. It’s so typical and boring that some people (mostly in tech?) believe technology can be completely separated from politics. Codeberg’s members have spoken which is exactly the difference we need compared to big tech, and yes, in a (healthy) democracy, there will always be disagreement. Either learn to deal with that or start your own member driven alternative (yay Open Source!) that better fits the values of you(r community).
