Psychologist Robert Sternberg created a triangular framework for love. Three components - passion, intimacy & commitment - make 8 potential types of love.

"Fatuous Love" combines Passion and Commitment. "Romantic Love" combines Passion and Intimacy. "Consummate Love" combines all three: Passion, Intimacy, and Commitment. Below the triangles, definitions are provided: Commitment is the decision to stick with someone, be loyal and support them; Passion is the physical arousal and emotional stimulus the other evokes; and Intimacy is the need to be close to someone and be attached, having a bond.

Psychologist Robert Sternberg created a theory about love. In this triangular theory, Sternberg discusses that love can consist of three particular components: passion, intimacy and commitment.

Based on which of these three components are present in the love between two people, a different style can be identified. This means that there are 8 different styles available, ranging from none of these components present (non love) to all of these present (consummate love).

Criticism when researching this theory are that love can change between people so time of measurement plays a role and that each level is difficult to validate.
