The Republican-led House Ways and Means Committee has subpoenaed BreakThrough News for internal communications and financial records as part of an investigation the nonprofit outlet calls a politically motivated attack on independent journalism and the First Amendment.
BreakThrough News says it has not been accused of any crime, receives no funding from foreign governments or institutions, and already complies with nonprofit tax and reporting requirements.
