Ireland with TFI Live and TFI Go apps for busses is another level of hell.

You need to use Live to find the route and times and it is buggy as hell. Then every person in your party needs their own phone and copy of the Go app (including children) to buy tickets. You also need to register accounts for each phone (no guest buying) and card details. Oh and they sometimes log you out.

In Dublin using Leap cards was a lot easier but you have to get the Leap cards and make sure you maximise value.

@ruari Stockholm isn't *terrible* ...

... but uses an app these days. Advantage for someone like me: buy a heap of single-trip tickets (with Swish/Vipps), have them in the app, scan one each time one want to travel.

Their *scanners* are poor, but the system works reasonably well.

@tina I have used the app but I also seem to recall you could also touch pay with a payment card. Do I remember this incorrectly or has it changed?

Netherlands, Rotterdam was pretty good at least for adults and older children as you can just tap debit/credit cards (or Apple, Google, Samsung, Fidesmo, .etc).

For younger children you can use the RET app to buy a daily ticket but I later realised that if you are just making a couple of journeys, it is easier and can be cheaper to use another payment card and pay as though they are adults.

Like all systems that use payment cards directly you need enough for all members of your party.

Oh, one other thing I did find annoying with the child's daily ticket is it is a QR code, which is fine in and of itself but when you bring your phone close to the QR reader it triggered the NFC Payment wallet on my phone as well. I was not double charged but worried I might be, so I disabled NFC for my phone and paid for my own adult ticket with Garmin pay on my watch.

Using busses in Reykjavik I could do the touch payment thing with a regular payment card or Apple/Google/Samsung/Garmin/Fidesmo. You can also use an app but again timing bringing the QR code was annoying and seemed to slow the whole boarding process up.

Oslo is fine as a local but I suspect it is very confusing to tourists. No touch payment with a payment card. You can either use Ruter app (which is not bad) or Entur or even Vy's app. This is almost too much choice. Oslo like many cities is zoned but most tourists will only likely need zone 1 and in any case the app should deal with this.

If you don't or can't use an App there are Ruter cards for topup or single purchase that you get in advance.
