Yesterday, multiple Mastodon users expressed worry that a photo I shared from Russia is AI generated, because the explosion looks spectacular.

However, I am sharing the photo because it is consistent with video from the same incident, shared by president Zelenskyy, which looks equally spectacular (note the green roof in the attached video).

I appreciate the concern, and I fully agree that it is important to prevent misinformation, but…

The photo is real, probably, but it's wayyy overprocessed. Painfully so. Somebody didn't know when to stop pushing all camera app sliders towards max.

That's probably what's triggering people to think it's fake - it doesn't look real, even if they can't put their finger on why.

… after 1610 days of war, I have not once seen any trustworthy media claim that Zelenskyy shares misinformation, and the incident is documented from multiple camera angles.

So while I cannot prove that the photo itself is real, it is clear that what the photo shows is at least an accurate depiction of what really has occurred, unless we believe that all the videos from all the sources are some large misinformation operation by Ukraine, and I do not believe that.
