As I speculated in my Disintermedia blog piece about the MOLE Trainers, a copyright case has gone against misAnthropic, ruling that feeding a text to a MOLE is *not* Fair Use, but a violation of the author's copyright. This report suggests that Anthropic didn't even appeal, they just folded and handed over US$1.5 billion in settlement payments, and agreed to pay ongoing royalties going forward;

1.5 *billion*, to one publisher, as a one-off settlement. A plethora of cases are brought by others are working their way through the courts. Each one will potentially extract a similar settlement, and ongoing licensing fees.
If MOLE Training was as profitable as surveillance advertising, this could all be dismissed as a cost of doing business. But it hasn't produced a single profitable company, and is already setting trillions of dollars on fire. So ...
