@carlmalamud Well they do say that every time a book or public law/regulation is scanned into the open digital archive that an angel gets its wings.
By-the-way, I have over the years been concerned that we are on the verge of entering a new Dark Ages as so much digital content (such as websites that are generated on the fly from databases and PHP code) will be lost as people die, domain names lapse, and as technologies fade (e.g. Flash).
I've not really engaged on that topic - I suspect that there are others who understand it more deeply than I do. But I have been converting my own websites to somewhat stable, domain-name independent, flat-file forms. (It seems to me that we need to preserve content-rendering environments as well as the content itself.)
Where will the Ken Burns of the future turn to find today's equivalent of those Civil War letters?
