Some of us want one place where we just want to be social and share our ideas without LLM contributions.
A space declares itself and kindly asks projects to not put LLM contributions up.
LLM bros get annoyed and start accusing the group of witch hunting etc etc.
There's a type who don't want us to have one LLM free space . Who'll bitch and moan about the sign saying you're not welcome here.
Respect the boundary.
You literally have the rest of the web, let us have this space.
@abucci yes, as others have noted LLM bros tend to out themselves.
@onepict @abucci This is one of the things that really informs my stance on LLMs: there's a large contingent of LLM proponents who are not content to have and use LLMs themselves - they insist on being able to use them *everywhere* for *anything* and damn anybody who objects.
Like, I'm not a vegan, but my brother is. I do eat meat. I do not insist that everybody else should though, and I make (or buy) vegan dishes when he visits. Likewise, I don't insist that every restaurant should serve meat. I don't even think I should be able to bring a meat dish to a vegan's house if they don't want me to. I'm not turning up at his house with a steak. It's about respect for other people's boundaries and values, even if I don't currently share them, and I just ask that they do the same for me.
And I was initially intrigued by LLMs. I think they do have some useful, non-harmful applications (e.g., transcription) in some areas, but overall, I find the net effects of generative AI too damaging. The harder people push for their usage, the more obliged I feel to resist them. At this point, it feels less like a "Oh, I'd like to try this" and more like a surrender if I give in.

In a city that bends over backwards to welcome tourists and Festival-goers, this is what you might call a "local place for local people".
If you're looking for a drug fuelled rave venue full of drum 'n bass there are plenty of other places. This pub is not for you.

@jzb @abucci With a lot of these things, I think it's an underlying political issue.
As a profession we've been encouraged to think of technology as neutral and not consider the underlying political factors that went into the technology's creation.
I mean LLMs are just the latest version of a "useful" technology causing harms and evangelists being determined to have it everywhere.
@onepict They might say "but the rest of the web is evil!" Huh. Yeah, spaces that don't prioritize ethics and social justice also don't have boundaries against LLMs. Coincidence?
it's just like safe spaces for any communities at risk. the abusers rail about witch hunts and reverse discrimination. there's plenty of internet/web for all of us to have some place we feel safe.

@rabbit74 @paul_ipv6 I chose to put the original post on quiet public for a reason.
I've not the interest in interaction at all with folks who are using LLMs and trying to argue that data ownership makes them fine to use actually.
I mainly want to say a quiet hey to folks who feel overwhelmed and want to know that they can and should state their boundaries.
Piling on isn't the answer here. Encouraging folks to make their own spaces is a more positive use of everyone's time.
@rabbit74 @paul_ipv6 We do more good by creating our own spaces and treating the boundary violations as a moderation issue.
If the folks want to play with LLMs it's their business. I can choose to encourage others to not do so in my spaces and to moderate those spaces accordingly.

It's not a witch hunt when you're openly declaring your aversion to a community's boundaries.
It doesn't seem any different from hanging out in the park with your mates, but asking people *not* to ride motorcycles/e-bikes/scooters or even bicycles at 30 km/h through the area where folk are walking and kids are playing so no one is at risk of being knocked over (and even then lads will often try and ignore these sensible rules)
