We should be banning surveillance capitalism in general; not accepting a toxic, manipulative, unsafe norm for everyone but children while depriving them of any ethical alternatives that might otherwise exist.
Instead, this is what we get when we have clueless/corrupt neoliberal politicians creating legislation.
When can we all agree that governments are controlled by the super-rich? That until we stop them, we have no chance of the possibility of actual self-governance?
@aral And when social media bans happen all the queer kids with abusive families are left alone in a world that destroyes third places. It makes me so fucking angry, as little corners of the internet were crucial in my journey of self-discovery
As somebody who was bullied out of several schools and lacked any third places to meet people, I genuinely sympathize with them having to just bottle up the rest of their lives.
@aral this is not banning surveillance, it is just changing it. Not sorting out the root causes, sticking a plaster over it. It is a retrograde step on the slippery slope that is freedom and utterly the wrong solution.
@EF It’s actually increasing surveillance as it requires age verification. The very thing Mark Zuckerberg has been spending billions lobbying for.
@aral isn’t it a start? I mean, looks to me an easier way to start attacking this problem.
