Every childhood sci-fi dream we had becomes reality. We now have vertical takeoff and landing airplanes running on green energy only.
I could definitely see this replace the short commute seaplanes used for instance between Copenhagen and Aarhus.

@randahl Tiltrotor is pretty much a non starter for civilian flight. There has been not a single tiltrotor plane licensed for passenger flight - too risky.

@randahl I hate that these are being marketed as flying taxis. It's a helicopter. It needs the same helipad to land, makes as much noise, and has a similar safety profile. Pilots will need similar levels of training. That it runs on electric is good... But that isn't what's preventing helicopters being used as flying cars.
@guigsy @randahl They are much quieter as the props run at slower speeds than a helicopter’s rotary wing and there isn’t a screaming gas turbine engine powering the thing. They reasonably claim that it’s safer than a helicopter as the thing can glide and it’s mechanically much simpler as it lacks the complex joint required for a rotary wing. Sure, it won’t ever be a flying car, but we do have other uses for expensive noisy copters that this can replace.
@bjn @randahl to achieve hover, the blades are going to be spinning much faster than a copter blade. Which is when it matters, because when it's landing, that's when it'll be closer to people.
They'll only be used by the 1%. And they still use a ton of energy for little benefit to society. But use up loads of land for pads, and produce a ton of noise. It's a helicopter.
