I have to pay increasing attention to what my phone does to pictures it takes. For example, my new Motorola phone includes a super zoom feature that actually uses generative AI to fill in details as it crops in! I turned it off, but others might not notice and upload such digitally created images to iNaturalist, where they'd actually impact scientific research

But ... why? The whole point of taking photographs is to capture what you *see*, not its most statistically average variant. If somebody wanted that, they could just describe the scene to Stable Diffusion or DALL-E afterwards, and avoid all the cost and hassle of a camera. Motorola are playing a dangerous game encouraging image generation.
@strypey @dantheclamman @simplicitarian Samsung phones paste image of Moon, when photographing light circle on a dark background. Just recently a photo appeared, where Huawei phone mistook a plane for bird and decorated it with feathers. Motorola joined the game quite late.
@brie Wow. Just wow. That's a whole new level of enshittification right there. But in a weird way it gives me hope. If proprietary software and services continue to become embarrassingly, unusably shitty, it gets easy and easier for rebel tech projects to compete on UX as well as ethics.

Every image with AI should get a giant watermark across the middle that says "FAKE", but I am pretty sure no one who sells AI will go for that.
Maybe we can compromise on a 1990s vintage image frame in yellow and black that looks like pixelated construction warning tape.

@dantheclamman I saw an example where it added feathers to a photo of a plane.
@cinebox and got the feathers the wrong way around.
Humans however did look at bird wings and modified plane wing design and saved fuel (added bits to the end to reduce drag).
Meanwhile, I expect that Boeing and others are inserting #LLM tools into their processes because... everyone else is stupid too.

@dantheclamman Samsungs camera app "touched up" my picture without my asking, since then, I've been using Open Camera, it doesn't have AI, though some may find all the manual adjustment options a bit overwhelming.
@dantheclamman my phone (Google pixel) just notified me of a feature that would allow me to "enhance" my photos 🤮
