guy whose opinion is always whatever the trendy new opinion is in tech: "heheh, bet you didn't expect that opinion did you? I'm pretty subversive ;)"
@cwebber christine this is dead wrong and you know it
these people would be winking with 😉 whilst telling you they read Cryptonomicon before Neal Stephenson was even born
@cwebber I literally get all my opinions by asking the weighted average machine 12 times a day and following people on LinkedIn who do the same. It's a narrow, lonely path I walk!
@cwebber If you have conventional opinions, all you have to do is find a community full of people with unconventional opinions and hang out exclusively there. Then, when you voice your mainstream opinions, you can cast yourself as an unconventional free-thinker. This way you get *both* the practical rewards of being in step with the mainstream *and* the emotional rewards of feeling like a special, unique snowflake!
@thomasjwebb @mcc @cwebber this comment actually just fully rewired my brain.
Like oh yeah, duh, that *is* what's going on with conservatives, isn't it? They pretend to be the new rebels, despite having centuries of incumbency for their shitty ideas, and we've only just recent progressed enough to move to a better world, and they think they're the alt culture for wanting to go back.
