The other day I accidentally discovered that I have the 31st most-followed account on Mastodon and this goes a long way toward explaining why my mentions/replies are so weird and terrible.
@evacide But often entertaining. You can turn a phrase like a knife. Very educational.
@evacide I don't envy you and wish I am never popular or cool enough to have that many people reading my shitposting or my serious technical posts, or anything really.
I want to throw up just thinking about it.
Congratundolences, I guess? 😑
@evacide …that certainly is a lot of followers
@evacide no YOU’RE weird and terrible! I’m just odd and mildly awful, thanks!
And…. I don’t really know you well enough / AT ALL to attempt my usual lame sarcasm so I’ll accept my block and never darken your virtual door again.
Probably.
@evacide FWIW, I like having you here
@evacide People should follow you. I get so goddamned frustrated and embarrassed that almost all of the female/NB accounts I follow here and elsewhere have to deal with this bullshit. I'm sorry.
I know this doesn't help you at all, but I am very grateful to have you here. You were one of the best voices on Twitter, and I'm so glad we both chose the same venue after the nazis took over the old bar...
@SQLAllFather I am very sad about Twitter. I feel like it was, very briefly, a magical thing that will never be replicated.
I feel that a lot,
Really, it is bad. Other people build blocklists by going through the replies on my posts and just adding the people who are being jerks.
@evacide I'm sorry about this. This place has a reply-guy problem.
@evacide thank you for your service. Yes, I confirm this is a valid tactic
@evacide you're a trend setter, it would seem!
@evacide I build out my block list by doing this.
@evacide 🙋🏼♀️i do this. in fact i'm doing it now
@evacide I thought about building a bot that could be summoned into a thread to tell a person they aren't being nice, tally up how many times someone has been warned for being a jerk maybe keeping track for the week, month, etc for trending. Maybe make it so it either reports out public or dm like top 10 offenders.
I need more spoons before I can make that a reality though.
@evacide i am new here i and i dont know how to use this site
@evacide I absolutely do this!
@evacide
I just use the mental ignore feature.
It's found in every human and cat brain and is activated by dumbasses and overly demanding idiots.
@ChrisHolladay Please take the time to consider that my experience differs from yours in several key ways, including the sheer scale of dumbassery. It's nice that you can ignore it, but this is not useful advice for most marginalized people or people who have big accounts.
@evacide
It was a thought...they usually dont take long to show themselves.
There do seem to be a lot of chaps on Mastodon who want your attention and say the stupidest shit in your replies to get it. Glad you haven't let it put you off. Yet.
@evacide yes I have literally done this with your posts <_<
it's horrific.
I read your posts and find each one quite helpful and informative. I'm sorry I don't reply with a thank you, maybe I should to help offset the reply guys.
Lately, I noticed the annoying replies are increasing in many people's threads, hopefully it's a result of an increase in the bots...?
🤞 Here's to a troll free day.
@_the_cloud @evacide (off topic) sad to see Robert Reich at No. 4 when zero of his posts use alt text
(on topic) I read a long form post by Anil Dash not too long ago about how many users, especially on Fedi, seem to dehumanize accounts with high follower counts, basically treating them as interactive entertainment instead of as actual people. Perhaps that contributes to your experience.
@draNgNon @_the_cloud Some of it is the large account effect, but it is compounded my misogyny (for me) and racism (for Anil).
@evacide @draNgNon @_the_cloud
I think all of this is true, but I also suspect that Fediverse and specifically Mastodon is very bad at handling the traffic and abuse of running a high follower account. It seems like there could be much better tools for managing abuse and interactions at scale.
Even Technology Connections had issues here without the compounding effects of misogyny and racism.
@evacide I really like your posts. I'm sorry there are so many chumpanzees (monkey see leader, monkey do what der leader does most of the time...)
@evacide Well, a lot of us like what you add to this place and value your opinions.
@evacide but mine are the good ones right right??
@kevinrothrock You are great, actually.
