@nonlinear And that can be interesting, given an interesting application. It’s just that local, ethical or not, they’re all the very top froth of someone else’s massive capex and subsidization, which is why I don’t see any _seizing_ going on. Or is are there grassroot orgs buying their own chips for, or at least raise of funds for, independent model training? I’ve seen some ideas of such cooperative efforts thrown around but have not see it come to fruition.

But why is it about AI ethics and not... EVERYTHING WE DO ON COMPUTERS?
How come anything AI should be met with a different standard than we have for other digital deliverables like:
- digital passports
-digital payments
- social media
It's a tall order, man. This is digital ethics, not just AI.
@nonlinear I completely take your point that one should not become fixated at the latest stick for wielding power, because it’s all about (class) power at the end of the day. I suppose my point is that for this specific technology to be able to be meaningfully wielded with a different agency it would, due to its derivative nature, require the costly training of models optimized for other aims. Like, most technology can be repurposed but, in the case of LLMs, if you don’t control your own data center or the means to rent compute, are you even in the game?
