@randahl We're in the period of the year that the Dutch call 'komkommertijd', lit. 'cucumber time'.

It's named after the time of the year that there's usually not much news due to Summer vacation and political recess, so newspapers had to find things to write about: exceptionally large or strangely shaped cucumbers and other Summer vegetables, for instance.

@randahl Possibly just a seasonal effect, the particular story much sounds like it.

In Germany, the phenomenon is known as 'Sommerloch' (transcribed 'summer hole') during the summer vacation times, when real news get scarce and a certain entertainment vibe moves in to keep the audience paying attention.

That's the time when news break of an alligator purportedly escaped to the wild (meaning your average lake preferred by wild swimmers). Alternatively, it can be a 3 meters monster catfish, and such stories then can drag out over six to eight weeks.

Escaped kangaroos (real or just alleged), nandu or even a cow run away from the butcher are less scary, bul come in handy likewise.

Said Danish lady apparently wasn't up to the mental challenges of the Great Outdoors - shit happens.

@randahl Seems it could become a proverb for a completely unimportant and uninteresting event: „a branch falling in the forest“. In German we have the slightly racist: „A sack of rice tilting over in China.“

@randahl darn, Yesterday I walked through a forest in northern Jutland and a big branch fell of a birch, but I didn’t think anything about it. Now I realise I am a coldblooded, nerves of steel, nearly inhuman superhero.

@randahl Perhaps "news" is becoming too scary and tv channels still want people to watch their programs so they just tell "light" stories... next, they'll have a large litter of puppies being the headlines, or amazing sunsets or something. Actual news events might be scaring the audience away.
