Last night I finished listening to this on shipping.
It is packed with mind-blowing statistics about the sheer scale of what we’ve engineered.
But also depressingly clarifying. The unintended message of its speaker, Sal Mercogliano, is that we are going the wrong way as fast as we possibly can, with little to no intent of placing a finger on the electronic ship’s wheel
…Flying is in my view another one of these *going the wrong way as fast as we can* things. It’s much more visible because it’s a consumerist action.
But what really oils the wheels of our insanity is shipping. Just *astonishingly* unsustainable.

…I was reading a thread earlier where there’s a bloke with a large-ish following who I encounter frequently. He’s doing his usual thing of being a loud hailer for the most un-nuanced unreal ‘drunk all the Kool Aid’ renewables are the shining turbines of gold on the hill.

…One of the many infinitely fucked up things about modern shipping is that oil used to be, by weight, the number one commodity shipped.
But these days, and growing, the #1 commodity is earth, in the sense of mined ores.
We are using bunker fuel (heavy fuel oil https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_fuel_oil) to push insanely large tubs of steel (made with coal) to carry raw ores across oceans to be refined elsewhere, to be turned into high value materials (with more coal) that end up in ‘renewables’…
@urlyman a rational society that treats the well being of its members as a necessity.
I dunno man, sounds pretty wild.
