Miss me with that shit. First, "traditional" archives absolutely can do this work, HAVE BEEN DOING this work, and you just shat on all of us. Apologize. Now. Then remove that sentence from anywhere you have it.
Second, you just gave a bunch of skilled, trained, capable archivists every reason to NOT HELP YOU. Bad tactics.

I don't speak for the group itself (there's a post coming, if it hasn't already; tl;dr, we seriously regret the wording and did not mean to erase your work or suggest that we are a replacement for anything like that). Personally... I'm very unhappy that we've upset and possibly alienated you and others. I can imagine how frustrating it must be to read a statement like that when you've been working on doing proper preservation and archival... if I were in your shoes and read something like that, I'd be mad, too. I'm sorry.
Honestly, for myself... proper archivists and librarians are exactly the people I want to work with. A lot of us are just queer anarchist scientists (or at least one or two of those things) who happened to have data storage, knowledge about torrents, and heard about DOGE explicitly cutting cloud contracts that store important scientific data (amongst other things).
For me... my desire is that I can help support archival efforts in a way that groups like DOGE and/or expensive cloud contracts can't touch. I suspect I'm not the only one in the group like that. If I hadn't already spent ages in college on chemistry, I'd love to go back and learn proper archiving and library science...

You are right & we have removed the sentence, while the mission statement is being rewritten
It was written in the infancy of our project and this sentence doesn't reflect what we believe - at least not in it's short and simplistic form.
A detailed explanation will follow tomorrow; but to be clear:
We never meant to slight the people and traditions who make working with knowledge possible in the first place. We don't want to put archives and their roles in question.

@dsalo @SafeguardingResearch hey, look. the context in which this was written was after trying to get institutions (some of us work at universities and have even worked in library and archive data for a few decades) to contribute resources early on. invariably the answer was "sure, you can have some tens of TB of disk space but only so long as you do not share what you have preserved". this is for a variety of dysfunctional institutional reasons where, in general, universities have sought to limit the latitude that academics and researchers have to use network resources for anything at all useful really. it was not always this way and personally I am very sad that these institutions have gone this way, having watched it happen.
it was absolutely not intended as a slight to those working in libraries and archives who do a fantastic job (and tend to be some of the most radical people I know) and themselves struggle against the same difficulties.
