At what point do you ditch a book that you are just not enjoying? At 30% or 40% or? I made it almost halfway through and the protagonist has done nothing yet except attend boring meetings. The story is tedious and the characters are annoying. Somehow it received good reviews, but I am left wondering how it ever got published 😠
@meg Sometimes I go all the way in out of spite
@meg i personally feel i've done due diligence at 100pp. however, i have thrown books back after as little as two sentences
(after picking up a hold, i'll read a few pages while still in the library. occasionally i return it immediately rather than lugging it home)
@meg Oh hell, 5 pages if it's clear I'm not enjoying it. Life is too short to read crap.
@meg depends on the book. Sometimes I make it 2/3 through and then lose motivation. Sometimes I bounce in the first few dozen pages.
Occasionally I push through because maybe I like the story and characters but something about the writing style grates, and I end up glad I did.
@dragonfrog Yeah, I guess it depends on the book and the author. Usually when I stop, I don't pick it up again.
@meg I’ll bail If I get to 20% and I find nothing of merit (especially no charters I’m curious about and no plot in evidence.)
@troublewithwords That's a good rule of thumb. I had read this author before, so I gave it longer than I probably should have.
@meg I do give authors I’ve read before a little more leeway. But sometimes no matter how well reviewed a book, it just doesn’t merit finishing.
@meg between 20 - 30%. Every time I've gotten close to halfway with a book I'm considering not finishing, I've regretted it. And I've never regretted not finishing a book. Not for long anyway.
@SallyStrange Yes, I usually stop around 30% too. But this time I was pushing myself because I thought I might be the problem! Thanks for reminding me that it's okay to just walk away.
