Linus causing an influx of Linux devs to go over and begin support of *BSD with the specific fervor to protect *BSD against AI incursions.
Cradle *BSD devs frustrated by converts who want to turn their OS into something it wasn't original set out to be.

The people pushed away from Linux by AI are probably motivated by quality factors. The GPL vs BSD thing is a thing, yes, but not *the* thing.
As for BSD conventions versus Linux ones, that could be something that evolves a little. There was never a BSD exactly like $randomLinuxDistro before because there wasn't the base to support a lot of different userlands. That could change, or people could make shim utilities and symlinks too.
...and so it goes... Lol
@tinker As a contrarian, I want a *nix OS with an AI model that curses at you like Linus yelling at Kernel devs...
@tinker Linux was a personal passion project for Linus. That others found it useful was icing.
I may disagree with Linus the person but it has always been clear, if you don't like what he is doing fork and go forth.
Linus owes us nothing. Right or wrong, he has his ideas for doing things and historically has shown he has zero fs to give if you're not on board with it.
Demanding creators and maintainers confirm to our perceptions of what they should be is a great way to drive them away.

@tinker I'm not a kernel developer, but if there are truly a bunch of Linux devs jumping ship to BSD, then are there enough of them to just make a Linux fork instead? I thought the argument against a fork was essentially that there wouldn't be enough personpower to develop it as well as the fork that Linus controls. Am I missing something?
@jamesmarshall - The fork would have to be of the kernel itself. While I use and have coded and scripted really tiny projects, I am not a developer or have experience in massive software projects.
So... I dunno!
Thats it. Smongst other things the kernel is farctoo featureful for most of us. It should be stripped as small as reasonably possible. But i jsve no idea what ther means in practice or if its even feasible.

Depends if they want to write code or manage a giant hard fork of a project that's developed by hundreds of paid developers, which your project will be forever compared to.

OSs are like any tool. better or optimized for some things more than others. i have used several linux distros, freebsd, etc. depending on the task.
the systemd overreach has already pushed me off some linux distros. AI slop in the kernel will push me off others.
i think you're spot on that we all need to be a bit patient with newcomers not getting some of the technical and cultural biases that various OSs are more suitable for, and go into education and evangelism, not abuse and disdain.
this is also a good opportunity to really talk about what your project goals, philosophies, and prime use cases are, along with explicitly talking about AI use, license types, etc. we all tend to avoid these but it's good to really review every few years to allow for mission, code, and reality creep.
@paul_ipv6 @tinker But also, I think it would be good for long-time Linux users (like me) that decide to switch to one of the BSD projects, learn the "why" of the culture before getting annoying about why it doesn't work like their favorite Linux distro.
