Yep, I'll repeat it: "just fork it" is as useful an advice as "mate, move to a different country if you don't like it here!" is. Technically it's maybe possible, but the financial and social cost of doing so means only the few most privileged ones can realistically have that option.
This points our the need for an alternative structure. Kernel alternatives are important.
It feels like there are also opportunities for different management structures than benevolent dictator are required, even if there are alternative kernels.
I'm reminded of an article I read recently about Gentoo and how it supports like 3 or 4 different kernel alternatives.

And even among the privileged, it’s not always realistic: less like “move to a different country,” and more like “just found a new self-declared nation-state on an oil platform.” You cannot just invent a whole ecosystem from thin air, even with a lot of money.
