Measured the wet bulb temp here at 83.4F (99F and 50% RH) this afternoon, which is below the "dangerous to everyone" level but above the "I get to go inside and take a nap" level.
@mattblaze I sov want a NWS Wet Bulb calc everywhere. And alerts.
@mattblaze If you don't mind my asking... how are you measuring wet bulb temp? Do you have a wet bulb thermometer, or are you plugging temp/RH into a chart or calculator or something?
@commonsguy I have a Fluke 971 that reads WB directly, but it's an easy calculation (based just on the temp and RH). Wet Bulb Globe Temperature , which adds solar radiation to the mix, is harder to measure (and I can't easily measure it myself).
@mattblaze As an escaped Floridian, I can attest the absolute misery of that temperature/humidity. That kind of weather can lead to heat exhaustion pretty quick, so good on ya for staying inside and drinking lots of fluids!
@mattblaze And then there's the air quality, which isn't awful *yet*…
@SteveBellovin Worse in NYC and PHL today.
@mattblaze I know. And western Massachusetts was truly awful earlier.
Fortunately the AQI in DC isn't as bad as had been forecast, but not far to the north (Philly, NYC) it's very smoky and unhealthy today.
Take it easy and drink lots of water, everyone.
@mattblaze This is the kind of AQI where good 3M respirators with N95 filter packs are a thing. Pity those don't count for medical places (no protection from you for others).
@tknarr Yeah, on really hot days the N95s with an exhaust vent are much better outdoors. Solving a different problem from infectious disease protection, though.
@mattblaze Yeah, but they do a better job of protecting me. Esp. with P100 filters. And some days I think "If those idiots not wearing masks don't care about exposing me to whatever they've got, why should I care about them getting exposed?'.
@tknarr Outdoors outside crowds the case for masks for general infectious disease protection is much weaker. But most people aren't going to carry around two different masks.
@mattblaze My (not so) little Alaskan is in DC for AIAS Grassroots and I've been watching the wet bulb index like a hawk, even though he's a grown-up and can take care of himself. https://www.aias.org/events/aias-grassroots-2026/
@mattblaze Not yet, but tomorrow's forecast isn't good.
