I've been thinking about what it would mean if forums worked with a shared API, then client would generate ids, and you would be able to add a forum/community to a client and work with it from there. Ideally, no registration simply with a generated identity. Compatible over SMF, phpBB, vBulletin, etc. Like .. add a forum and participate, with each forum being specific to its community/topic.

@neil There are still some surviving. My favourite hangout is on a welding forum, which despite the name, covers all sorts of topics, and has a really caring, funny, bunch of regulars, from a really diverse background. A great oasis, outside of the tech community 🙂

@neil Same (and newsgroups and BBSes, which I think are the same thing). I made a lot of friends in the late 90s and early 2000s but have lost touch with most of them. I have just discussed Ready Player One at film club which triggered a lot of nostalgia.

I actually miss forums too. I used to be in a couple which were really joyful places to hang out in my mid teens.
