For anyone who's curious about the dead fridge saga, we're on day 3 of walking out to the barn every time we need something out of the (backup, 75-year-old) fridge, with a dead, partially disassembled fridge sitting in the middle of the kitchen because my partner and I both agree buying new things that are going to break in 5 years is stupid. (We did find a place in the city that sells refurbished fridges, so we might get one of those, but first have to do way too much research about it...)
@sundogplanets do you know what is broken in it?
Shit I still don't want to buy a new fridge. But having a working fridge instead of a dead, partially disassembled fridge in my kitchen would sure be nice....
@sundogplanets When I separated last year, I took the spare fridge, and old-ish Samsung that my ex's sister left us at some point. It must be about 12 years old by now. Every now and then it starts making the kind of noise that makes me think it's going to take its leave soon, but so far its going strong. A standup freezer we had on the other hand, I forget the brand, lasted barely five years. Due to logistics it was uneconomical to repair but was also never replaced.
@rainynight65 @sundogplanets I have a Samsung of that vintage...solid fridge, but occasionally the defrost heater misses a bit of ice and the interior fan rubs on it, making a sickly sound. Next defrost usually gets it, and the sound goes away for a while.
@johnefrancis Ah, thats interesting. The sounds it makes sometimes could be something rubbing on a fan. I don't know enough about fridges, I always thought it could be the compressor going bad.
Also always fun when the fridge vibrations are amplified by things touching inside, e.g. glass jars...
@sundogplanets I've had 5 in the last 20 years. New ones just plain stink! (though I have a freezer built in 1958 if I remember correctly, that's still going strong!)
@GoatsLive The 1951 fridge in the barn is what we're using now. I really want another one of those, but a bit bigger, and without the kind of door you can totally get locked inside...
@sundogplanets @GoatsLive These guys might have what you want
@sundogplanets Buy a second-hand fridge?
@HI_Greens That's the current plan. Requires a lot of extra logistics in rural Sask, so hasn't happened yet...
@sundogplanets
Recommendation: If you buy a fridge, do *not* by LG. They are champions of the short-life refrigerator.
I love reading about people's repair and fix journeys. I'm glad it's summer though that you're having to go outside to the (75yo) fridge and not the depths of Saskatchewan winter!
@grb090423 I thought that too! Then I realized that if it was winter I could just use the enclosed porch for a freezer and the back room for a fridge, so it would actually be a lot more convenient haha
Oh! That's a good point 😅
@sundogplanets i only read safe and logical procedures here, thanks for sharing 🙌🏼
