I ordered a KVM and I was hoping it would be here by today so I could hook it up before I leave for our drive to California, but no. It’s coming tomorrow.
Good thing Kim will be here to recieve it.
I wanted it so I can get my ancient Mac Mini -- got it for $99 -- up and get the 8TB drive hooked up. We're gonna use it as a home server of sorts. Backup, media, etc.
@fahrni You are driving to California? Making it to southern CA perhaps? :)

I used KVMs in the past and I like them. So I picked one up. Who knows, I may do some screen sharing for the Mini. I just don't know yet.
Plus, I'm old and lazy, Thomas. I'm just gonna use what I know and move forward.
Are you just talking about screen sharing between Macs or Macs and other computer types. E.G. Windows and Linux?
@fahrni well you are using a Mac, and the built-in screen sharing on Macs (VNC) is pretty good. I still used it to talk to all of my Mac servers, even a Power Macintosh G4 running Leopard in the basement.
@Eggfreckles There was a time when VNC was seen as a security risk so I've stayed away from it for years and years.
Is that no longer the case? Is it considered safe to use now?
@fahrni Ooh, a proper KVM? I’ve been using separate cheap HDMI and USB switches since I set up my home office in 2020. Someday I should clean up that rat’s nest of wires and get a proper KVM switch. Today is not that day.
@cjhubbs Yeah, I like 'em. Back when I was at Pelco I used one to switch between my main dev box and my dev embedded devices, on occasion. Mostly I was ssh'd into them watching logs, but once in a while I'd use VNC to switch to them and debug directly on the device.
