Written in 2024, and I don't know why folks are still surprised.
Some folks will always see technology merely as tools, choosing to ignore the political side.
Some BDLs have always been the way they are. It's the nature of any project, FOSS or not.

But the size of a project, it's participants and how large it's userbase is very much determines if you can fork a thing.
Too big to fork, sounds like too big to fail.
Our ecosystem is stuck.
@onepict I spent many years expecting a lot of open source. I've spent the last few years continually disappointed by it.
And by it, I don't mean the technical opportunities. Those are still impressive. I'm referring to the structures which arise built out of humans surrounding these projects.
We have a massive governance problem, and in many ways that is downstream from a massive *capitalism* problem (and patriarchy, etc). And I wish I knew how to solve all that, but I don't. 😕

Software and FLOSS are cultural artifacts made by crowds.
Every attempt to separate those folks from other social places (like with elitist stance) pave a path to a throne.
We need to better consider social configuration like at café Karanfil (Berlin), café Theodore (Lokemo) and many others around the world.

And I'm also thinking about many organisations into apc.org network.
I mean : right now mainstream floss scene is totally western biased and We are paying a heavy price for this individualistic libertarianism at the courts of the various dukes and kings.
But in many liminalities various beautiful social configurations are doing great things.

I feel that both Free Software and Open Source have a massive issue. They are ideologies that have more in common with libertarianism that's based on individual freedoms, rather than community freedoms based on Human Rights.
Yes Freedom of Speech (code) is covered. Freedom of Association in Safety? The right for everyone to have a habitable ecosystem?
Nah, it's "fuck you, this tool is useful."

@onepict I don't really see how focusing around "community rights" would make a difference, though.
It isn't as if Linus isn't rejecting the political side here, too - even if you feel that is is not communitarian and instead more libertarian.
What Linus is instead telling us is that he was lying about the politics all along. That could have happened under a more community oriented license too.

I think it's more we lied to ourselves.

@onepict I think I get where you are coming from (and I need to read your blog post more thoroughly), but I don't know that we lied to ourselves, except to believe that license actually meant something.
I think this points to an overall erosion of norms too, but the idea that we can't count on the so-called "letter of the law" to mean what it says is foreign to those (especially) who the "law" has previously protected.
I think the danger has always been to count on the letter.
