Here’s a snapshot of shipping in the Gulfs of Persia and Oman from 14 years ago, since when – prior to 28 Feb this year – the weight of moving cargo will have increased by about 70%.

For GDP watchers, a shortfall of about 3.4% of an entire year’s worth of the global economy’s keystone mineral. So far.
A shock that is yet to come
@urlyman One of many things that are absurd about our current situation is what we're using the "national strategic reserves" for. e.g.
Ensuring that people can drive cars at absurdly low prices
Keeping flying cheap so that people can go on holidays by air.
In the past I had the idea that these strategic reserves would come into play only for really fundamental things, like if we were really cut off from all fuel imports due to war, or to ensure the food supply (i.e. things like tractors on farms and trucks from farms to shops)
But no. The strategically important thing turns out that people's subsidized climate destroying holidays must not be interrupted in any way at all.
@hembrow @urlyman at least in the USA (but also elsewhere) the strategic reserves are being used to prop up the sagging popularity of its government, facing its mid-term elections in November, a government that had promised to cut fuel prices and control the cost of living, while actually achieving the opposite.
…Sure, in the snapshot above there are a few stray dots representing ships seemingly stranded in the desert (as opposed to ships of the desert), which I presume are down to LatLng modelling errors.
But don’t get hung up on the flaws in the visualisation. Let’s focus instead on the fatal flaws of our #stupidEconomy.
