So serious question...
What is #OpenBSD's take on AI? (in general and as a whole, i imagine individual contributors have their own stances of course).
I'm running out of places to run to (and I'm already standing and fighting as much as I am able).
@tinker 2001 a new telco in a small country suddenly discovered they needed internet access urgently. As an interim solution I put OpenBSD on a PC with two NICs and set it up as router, firewall, dns server, and mail server. Worked like a charm, solid as.
@tinker maybe this could be the year of GNU/Hurd on the desktop...

HyperbolaBSD and MirBSD have anti-AI policies. NetBSD allows core maintainers to sign off on LLM generated code, but to date they have not yet.

@tinker I know the Linux kernal and Ubuntu are tainted, but I personally use @elementary and it's a joy. Run by the wonderful @danirabbit
As pointed out by awesome folks in the thread and as I'm looking things up in my half awake state of mind in the middle of the night...
- OpenBSD doesn't really use systemd
- It has an awesome approach to development
- I can run Bash on it (I live in Bash)
- Most of my common pentest tools run on it, often maintain in native packages
- Most of my common household tools run on it (looking up how many are maintained in packages)
- I can run my favorite Desktop Environments in it.
I guess the last question would be what's the state of OpenBSD gaming and is this the year of OpenBSD Desktop?! 😂
(No, seriously, can I run Steam in OpenBSD? Is there Proton or Proton-like emulation / compatibility layer for running Windows games in OpenBSD?!?!?!)
No joy on much gaming on OpenBSD but that's fine. I'll just keep my game box running Linux.
While I niche myself even further down the computing rabbit hole.
Gods, I've had my head down these last few months with family and life stuff, so I've not been kept fully abreast.
But Canonical doing the most Canonical thing and fully embracing AI just plain hurts.
I'm such a (classic) Luddite. It feels like the world is collapsing around me.
And its not just "new tech bad".
I love the advances we're having in balcony solar, and cutting edge hydroponics, and non-LLM automation, and machine learning as it relates to medicine and accessibility, and meshnet communication standards and tech.
I hate surveillance tech like Palantir and Flock, just like I hated blockchain and NFTs, and Generative AI LLMs, etc.
I'm just going to core out a space in my life and find folks who do the same and try to strengthen them.
Looks like I'm going to move to OpenBSD soon though, so that's nice.

@tinker personally I'm hoping that the house of cards will collapse before I have to contemplate moving. I think to a large degree people are using the slop machine because it's subsidised to the point of being cheap. I'm expecting it to be largely abandoned when it gets priced realistically.
@http_error_418 - Yeah, I certainly hope so. There are too many variables and too much money and power to artificially prop this up that I have absolutely no idea how it will go (this is neither doomerism or defeatism, I just honestly can't make a prediction one way or another).
And if the house of cards falls I have no idea of what collateral damage that will cause, etc.
I equate the current economy and even computing as a termite ridden house. Even tearing out the failing structure will have consequences.
So. Yay. :-/
@tinker I'm not a big fan of what Linus is doing here. I mean I get his pragmatic stance... but we don't build in a vacuum. Not anymore.

@tinker I haven’t seen an official statement about AI code generation.
I can’t imagine any of the openbsd devs wanting to use that stuff—they care about quality, even when they have to choose it over practicality.
@0x09 - I've been meaning to look deeper in OpenBSD for many years now. This might be the impetus that finally pushes me to do it.
I live in Bash (heck, I dont even know Bash's take on AI right now...) but I imagine I can learn enough Korn Shell to get around and run bash on top of it.

@tinker I mean, they consider it a bug if the program and the documentation don’t match, and won’t merge code that doesn’t include corresponding documentation
@tinker these, among other reasons, are why I’ve been using OpenBSD since 2.3 😁
