@neil Both are excellent books. The Odessa File is very enjoyable.

For more modern recommendations with some science, and science fiction thrown into the mix I recommend Termination Shock and also The Future by Naomi Alderman

@neil After I heard that Frederick Forsyth died, I bough a few of his books. Over the past 12 months I've read Jackal, Odessa, and Fourth Protocol. All really good! Jackal was probably my least favourite of the three.

@neil Steve Cavanagh also writes some excellent crime-thriller books. They are set in America but the main protagonist is a lawyer. You’ll either enjoy them or roll your eyes a lot.

Jack Higgins is also good if you fancy something a bit more lightweight.

@neil They’re both excellent and fairly well served by their film adaptations too.

Have you tried the Slow Horses books by Mick Herron? The TV series are good but the books are even better.

@neil The “Slough House” series is an obvious suggestion, but I’d suggest going either/or on the novels vs TV series

@neil Mick Heron does a mix of the two. He is the author of the slow horses series of books. They are most enjoyable.

@neil from the same era can I recommend ‘horse under water” by Len Deighton - very evocative of pre-development Spain and Portugal (and indeed 1960s London)
