Lol I take this is the swinging 60's (I am sure that cover would have been wrapped in brown paper in the town I grew up in...) #lps #herbalpert
@ai6yr Fun fact: When this album was created, to capitalize on the success of "The Lonely Bull", there still actually was no "Tijuana Brass" per se. These songs were all performed by Herb and some of the super session musicians here in L.A. (See the wonderful documentary "The Wrecking Crew", which may still be available free on YouTube in the U.S.)
@lauren Oooh, interesting...
@ai6yr I still have this LP. When I was a teenager, one of my hobbies was building telephone answering machines (this ties in with my association at the time with the infamous last listing in the Los Angeles telephone directory, ZZZZZZ, of which I've written about in other venues previously). Anyway, I used the track "Whipped Cream" as my backing for my outgoing voice announcement. Answer, wait past the opening percussions and then, "Nobody is available right now to take your call. You can leave a message when you hear the tone signal. Please be sure that you speak loudly, slowly, and clearly, so that we'll be sure to receive your message. Thank you for calling!" I still use a variation of that script, but with a different backing these days. Whipped Cream of course was the track that "The Dating Game" used to introduce the female contestants. By the way, I've heard Herb did not initially care for that cover.
One of the other guys at ZZZZZZ used a different announcement on his machine:
"A summer breeze may kiss the sky ...
The bees may kiss the butterflies ...
Ruby lips may kiss a glass ...
And YOU my friend may ... leave a message at the tone."
@ai6yr Who is that obnoxious-sounding kid? Who is that pushy salesman? - https://lauren.vortex.com/zzzzzz-70s.mp3
@ai6yr Alpert has an interesting reputation. At the time, he was thought to be a potentially great serious blower, and over time he became known as someone who let go of the dream to succeed at pop.
@ai6yr We had that album. Parents were big Herb Albert fans. Still touring at least up to last year
