House committee passes permanent Daylight Savings Time bill, setting it up for a vote in the House. The Senate stupidly passed a version in 2022 unanimously without considering the implications. This new House version apparently includes a state opt-out.
@lauren 😮 ... are they really that dumb? What is the point of a timekeeping rule that allows an opt-out (because presumably you can just stick with the existing time change)
@klausfiend They're just trying to satisfy everyone. The reality is that a hard rule screws different parts of the country. Too dark in the morning during Winter, etc. Actually, if they pass something with an opt-out it lets states experiment and give it up if it doesn't work. It will cause massive confusion not knowing which state has which time but it's better than a forced everyone one way or another. It is notable though that permanent daylight savings time was tried during the Nixon administration, and after some kids were killed in the dark waiting for school buses they terminated the experiment early.
@klausfiend The answer to your first question is affirmative.
