what's the german word for the reply-guy who thinks they're asking a profound question that no one else has ever thought about before, but is in actuality just a tedious and contrarian reply-guy
@inquiline this is rly alien to me in an amusing way bc (exactly as you indicate) i basically have to bully myself into accepting that i'm allowed to think i might have just realized something profound and new (this used to be worse and is textbook OCD symptoms but i'm much better with it now)
@inquiline currently, recently, i have been exercising this self-acceptance process very frequently and publicly, but my excuse is that i am mostly just learning a lot about how institutional politics result in incredibly fucked-up and broken scientific programs
everyone is always learning and no one should begrudge others their learning! i'm just mad at the people who talk down to others in tedious mastodonian 'splainy fashion (and are quite often wrong to boot)
@inquiline i don't know about the german but i think the latin is "mostusdicus"
(today's variant has a healthy side, if you will, of Beide Seiten)
@inquiline Ah, a better question is, what isn't the German word for said guy, and then with the help of a German dictionary we can use the process of elimination to…
…
I'll get my coat.
@inquiline I'm guessing whatever sealion is in German
I shared my undergraduate years as a math major with a guy who would raise his hand after the teacher answered someone else's question, pause thoughtfully, and then begin "but the really deep question is..." Often it ended with an argument with the teacher, who at some point in the quarter would have gotten as tired of his nonsense as we already were. Friend, we're undergraduates and math is hard. None of our questions are really deep,* even moderately deep, not even unasked and usually answered long ago.
He had a German name and I always think of him when these guys show up, but I'm not sharing it here because I don't want to shame him if he happens to be reading. Anyway, that's my own private German word...
[*] With a very few but significant exceptions, among which this guy was not.
i appreciate that you don't want to shame him but "Johannes" popped into my head so that's what i imagine he's called
