I am not opposed to healthy scientific inquiry into the supernatural as such.
However, "shooting the strange entity to see what happens" does not strike me as the best approach.

In some ways it's reassuring to think that there's a subset of humans who when faced with a potentially unknowable and maybe even higher power will be "Idk, idk... let's try the slingshot test first..."
But maybe only best let out for special occasions!

Oh, there's all sorts of precedents for modern ploys in old folk tales. The cultural context may have changed, but human thought processes have not.
