HOLY CRAP THATS A LOT OF MONEY! 😳
@fahrni They still go for $700-2500 on eBay, depending on specs. But the depreciation on such beasts is on nightmare levels, even worse than a Cybertruck. Tells you something on where these “AI” datacenters are heading in 1-3 years.
@jwildeboer It makes me long for a time when I could replace parts of my computer, like I did when I went from a 286 to a 386sx motherboard and reused everything else (I think I reused my memory, but not 100% certain about that.)
Anyway. It's sad. Linux on old hardware looks better and better every day. Too bad I develop for Mac and iOS now, which I really do love.
@fahrni Mac hardware has quite a long lifecycle. No need to replace them every 2nd year. I see older iMacs still being used in many places. And Apple is growing their market share through “AI” in interesting ways. With a trend towards running LLMs (Large Language Models) locally, the current chips in Mac Minis have turned out to be a quite attractive platform for them and sell extremely well. Even with exploding RAM prices.
@jwildeboer Oh, yeah, Macs definitely hold their value and longevity. I just ordered a new MacBook Air (after the increase unfortunately.)
That will last me for I'd guess seven to 10-years, which is perfect. I have an older x86 based MacBook I'm thinking about installing Linux on. Any recommendations for Linux distros there? 😃
