For anyone who doesn't know what "sicko mode with RF capture" means in the context of VHS videotape digitisation - check this out. Note particularly the clarity in the full head zoom at about 30 seconds in. The detail in the hair for example. (it's work watching full screen on a decent/large monitor with your YouTube quality cranked right up - but even on your phone it'll be impressive)
It's a software restoration of a VHS tape recording of a 1987 tv show!!! It's _stunning!_ I had _no idea_ that level of detail was making it onto the tape way back then (only to be let down by the playback process). And it's all open source software, you can do this yourself at home if you are sufficiently motivated.
JVC HR-S7950 VCR - $700 (negotiable)
Got this to digitise a few tapes for my parents. It did the job very well. S-Video output and built-in time base correction, about as good as you'll get without going sicko mode with RF capture. Imported from Europe, has a 2-pin power cable. Power supply is multi-voltage, just need a cheap travel adapter.
