Advertisement is literally non-consensual mind control
@andrewrk it is psychological warfare, but if there were none, television would not exist.
i walk around literally holding my soundbar remote ready to 'mute'.
no one makes anyone actually pay attention to ads. they're not going away, and they pay for a whole lotta shit. i hate them at the same time i understand the necessity of them.
@andrewrk
*attempted* maybe.
@andrewrk in a sane society, all advertisement beyond the simplest "these are our products, with these features, for this price" would be banned
@andrewrk It isn't really, but that's the ad networks' sales pitch to advertisers. So agreeing with it amounts to criti-hype, as @pluralistic explains.
@ygor @pluralistic thanks for the link, I always appreciate Doctorow's writing.
I think that you are essentially correct (even though I am not critiquing something I read from someone else; "mind control" are my own words)
however I think my implied point also stands which is that advertisement absolutely does harmfully impair our agency whether we like it or not.
it can be both immensely harmful and an ineffective business plan
@andrewrk this is why i never let anyone make me feel bad for using ad blockers
@andrewrk yeah. They pay money to get in the way of what you are trying to do.
@andrewrk If we make it illegal to hack computers, why not make it illegal to hack brains?
@andrewrk i mean yeah. i both agree and disagree. i think advertisement can be nice if it makes you aware that something exists. i however also feel like plastering it everywhere and targetting it is rather unethical. but then again i watch game-events which are literally just back-to-back game trailers so that might say more about me than you
@Abstract_Mage_Annastasia sounds like you are engaging with the "consensual" concept
@andrewrk kind of i guess. look if it where up to me we wouldnt even live in capitalism so i think that just "mitigating" it isnt really a win. i however also admit that i do like cool stuff be that physical or conceptual (programming languages, operating systems etc) and i want to have ways to find out about said stuff
@Abstract_Mage_Annastasia I can think of a lot of nice ways to find out about stuff without intrusive advertisements
@andrewrk Thankyou!
Modern marketing is the largest mass manipulation campaign in human history and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.
@MissAemilia @andrewrk all forms of misinformation and dishonest manipulation should be criminalized.
Lies of omission are lies.
False implications are lies. (Like that you'll have a better sex life or whatever for buying junk.)
And then address paid placement as theft of attention.
@andrewrk Also a pretty solid argument against the concept of free will and for determinism.
