the answer to my debian 13 bluetooth woes is that bluetooth audio doesn't seem to fucking work unless you're running GNOME

there's a bug to this effect which i can't find again

if i had a list of my floundering fucking around i'd post it, but it involved installing libspa-0.2-bluetooth, editing /etc/pulse/default.pa to add load-module module-bluez5-device load-module module-bluez5-discover then restarting pulse and when that didn't work restarting the box

anyway got bass now w00000t

oh yeah debian 13 xfce runs pulse, not pipe

yet again pulse solves all your linux audio problems except ones you have

@davidgerard never had any problems since wireplumber happened, but also my desktop is a fedora's KDE, which is definitely more recent than debian stable.

My wife is running deb stable cinnamon desktop and uses bluetooth audio daily. The connect/disconnect is sometimes a bit sketch (every bluetotooth GUI I ever tried is a bit sketch though).
So, it *can* work without gnome I guess? Happy to poke at her config if there's anything that'd help to know.

@smalladventures.net IIRC the debian bug said something about Cinnamon working but only if GNOME was already installed? so it sounds like one package missing from the defaults

@davidgerard It's Poettering; this is to be expected.

I recently reinstalled my desktop (buggered cheap nvme) and was rather astonished that BT audio just worked. No idea what I got right, unfortunately. Pipewire, not pulse.

@dickon pipe *did* solve a lot of issues, which is nice

but this is what i get for running stable

(which otherwise is suprisingly nice, and I'm now an ardent fan of Firefox ESR)
