I’ve been working on a new website for some months, struggling to explain myself and my needs to a designer, struggling equally to be satisfied with what emerges from the process, and damned if @aworkinglibrary doesn’t go and nail it all down in the meantime. This site is a gorgeous container for the work, and fully worthy of it.
@aworkinglibrary @adamgreenfield Oh, that’s fantastic. I need to take a look at Jekyll. I’ve stopped building my websites myself and switched to pre-built templates because I hate wrestling with WordPress so much. I’m definitely going to look into this as an alternative.
@fishsauce @aworkinglibrary Yes, if I’d had this as an exemplar in February I wouldn’t have spent [mumble] hiring a designer to hack Ghost into a shape it doesn’t really want to be in.
@adamgreenfield @fishsauce fwiw i think the cool kids are using eleventy these days, but i've been on jekyll for a dozen years and didn't want to change.
it requires some dev skills but i'm a big believer in personal sites being built on tech that allows the work and personality to drive the form, rather than the other way around.
@aworkinglibrary @fishsauce I am too, I just don’t have the skills to make good on that belief.

@aworkinglibrary I really mean it! Its visual “voice” matches that of the writing perfectly, and that is not at all an easy thing to do.
I think you’ve also handled the distinction between free-forever subscription and paying support of the site and project beautifully. I’ve been wrestling with this myself, and just have not been able to find language that satisfies me.
