apprenticeship models of employment are really nice, and we need more things that can be shaped into that model
it's kind of optimal in some ways? like, minimal skill threshold required, minimal requirements to get an apprenticeship, get trained on the job and paid to do it
it's a good approach to having employment pathways for people, because it means that as long as there are apprenticeships, there are jobs for anyone who wants one, and no hassles to getting one
but it also means that there are career paths that clearly go somewhere, beyond the entry level position of apprentice
the problem is that the apprenticeships need to be properly designed to be both educational (so we have to know some amount of how to teach people skills, etc.)
but also we need to be able to slice up work in such a way that novices can do stuff that contributes a nonzero amount
an apprentice machinist, for instance, might do things like cut stock, take measurements, do job setup tasks, assemble necessary tools, learn and do maintenance, etc.
all of this is important work to do and has an associated skill to learn
