So, Graham Platner is finished. Serious attention will now turn to who will replace him and by what process.
The big question will be whether a progressive Democrat aligned with the ideals and policies that Maine voters nominated, or an establishment corporate Democrat aligned with Chuck Schumer, is installed. At present it looks very possible that they will try for an establishment Dem. How will Maine voters respond? These are uncharted waters.
@mastodonmigration Schumer endorsed Platner before all this happened, and before that, Schumer’s initial favored candidate was Maine’s governor, who defended trans kids from the Trump Administration.
So “will it be a progressive or someone Schumer likes” is a trick question.
Platner had vowed to vote to replace Schumer as Leader. At this point Senate Democrats are divided on Schumer's continued leadership with many of the progressive senators looking to replace him with someone like Chris Van Hollen or Chris Murphy. Who wins in Maine could decide both which party has the majority and who is the Democratic Leader.
@mastodonmigration It looks like Collins is going to win in Maine again because of these shennanigans, unfortunately.
Maybe, but that is far from clear. A lot will depend on who they select to replace him and how they do it.
