age verification laws being written in a way that impacts social media websites specifically, including federated ones, and basically has no impact on peer to peer systems, is pretty fantastic, assuming people pick up the slack and build p2p alternatives

This may be a loophole at the moment but it's only that, a loophole, loopholes get closed eventually.
@ariarhythmic they can't write the _same_ law, because the law is basically about hosting content that other people create, without review
@ariarhythmic they can write other laws, but those laws would have to either be tailored to p2p specifically, which might be a problem for ISPs generally, or would have to be so vague that it would apply to the entire web
either way it would be very harmful to the internet and to the economy as a whole
whereas the laws _as written_ are quite finely tuned to target social media and it's close cousins
