What if we ban computers from using kids instead?
@jbz
This is how it all started.
"Processing personal information of children is illegal"
"Cool, I'll ask users if they're adult at registration, and if they lie that's their problem"
"Nope, still illegal, still your problem"
"Ok so how do I prevent children from accessing my website so that I don't accidentally process their personal information?"
Thinking in terms of children leads nowhere. We must ban computers from using humans regardless of age, otherwise we'll end up with age verification
And cost the techbros their grooming grounds?
@jbz I still stand by the idea that we should ban over 50s from using social media.
@jbz @logicalmoody
Yes, and…
If we’d sent the Facebook bros to jail for stalking and put up strong privacy laws for everyone, kids might be better off
If they couldn’t sell kids (or anyone’s) data without seizure and forfeiture it’s hard to imagine us getting where we are
But 🤷🏻♂️
@jbz we couldn't possibly do that, it might get in the way of the coming AI takeover!
Now that is a subject-verb-object campaign I could rally around.
@jbz Regulate platform behavior, not user behavior.
@jbz this whole deal isn't really that hard... Just hold parents accountable for teaching kids about the internet. Don't Ban, but Teach.
Have we learned nothing from all of the "burn all XYZ books" movements?
@jbz What if we ban billionaires from owning anything computer-related…?
Wait, I have an even better idea, what if we ban billionaires?
@jbz or.. crazy idea.. ban computers from using all of us ?!
@jbz
Could cut into profit margins, it'd never fly.
@jbz How about having devices designed specifically for kids? No internet access but they can get calls and texts on phones, and off-line only laptops can run the programs they need to do homework and play non-online games. Then, when they're old enough they can own grown-up devices. They have to be of a certain age before they can drive a car or buy alcohol... (Not a real suggestion, but maybe a start for another way to think about the issues?)
@jbz plz. That is exactly the rethoric used for killing privacy and mass surveillance.
