Last night I was heating the wok to make fried rice (using up leftover proteins from previous dinners as I do) and I found, to my surprise and dismay, that there was only one tiny, limp carrot in the fridge (normally we have heaps). Instead of panicking, I remembered that we had a root-bound carrot plant growing in our greenhouse. So I rushed out in the dark, found the pot mostly by feel (the carrot foliage is distinctive) and brought it out onto the deck to investigate. 1/3
The 'ball-o-carrort' was so sizeable that I couldn't pull the bunch out of the flimsy pot. So I cut it off with nearby scissors (left in the greenhouse to cut open seed packets). I managed to pull a bunch of wee carrots out of the dense mass and damp soil... shook off most of the dirt and brought them inside to wash properly and chop up for the wok. Worked a treat (& they were *so sweet*). So just went outside to discover I'd left the remainder of the pot on the deck, a confronting site... 2/3
I'd left most of the tortuous carrot bounty lying there in my haste. So now I have a bunch of tasty wee carrots to add to my next culinary adventure. It's always fulfilling (and tastes so good!) when we use stuff that we've grown ourselves... looking forward to making the greenhouse work even better in the coming year!
