The fact that the first time Frodo uses the ring in the book is cause he's irritated at Tom Bombadil being kind of careless with it even though Bombadil's made it clear he's basically on another plane of Power really adds a "know-it-all undergrad" air to his characterization and I'm both bewildered and delighted by this
