The CEO of Zulip left to work for Anthropic.. not great.. but not the same as Zulip being taken over?
https://blog.zulip.com/2026/05/15/announcing-zulip-foundation/
One, perhaps three, of the directors of the foundation work for Anthropic, I think?
yeah.. the link I quoted says
"The foundation’s initial board of directors will be:
- Tim Abbott, Zulip’s founder (me).
- Greg Price, who has helped me lead Zulip in a cofounder-like role for the last 9 years.
- Alya Abbott, Zulip’s product lead, who has also held a cofounder-like role for the last 5 years.
- Josh Triplett, a leader in the Rust programming language, experienced in open source, and a major advocate for Zulip."
and later:
"I’m stepping back from Zulip to join Anthropic because of its remarkable commitment to the responsible development of AI for the long-term benefit of humanity. Three additional members of Zulip’s longtime leadership team are also joining me at Anthropic: Alya Abbott, Greg Price, and Alex Vandiver."
so, the only person in that board of directors who isn't moving to Anthropic is the last one, "Josh Triplett".
Hard to know what this means for Zulip but I certainly don't like it.
@neil @anton According to this, a bunch of the developers have been hired by Anthropic and sound like they're enthusiastic about this. https://lobste.rs/s/2whryd/announcing_zulip_foundation
Yes, disappointing, but the positive thing is they did not drag Zulip into the (for-the-moment) money-spewing sewer with them. Might've been nice if there was both a for-profit company and a foundation, but if we have to pick one, formalizing the community-first approach is best, and keeping the Zulip project away from toxic Anthropic is so much better than these developers trying to take Zulip with them.
