Boil the bastards with a healthy unhealthy amount of sugar. Or honey
Butter flour brown sugar and some oats for extra crumble crunch
If it's still hard after the oven, try microwave to soften the rhubarb then stick it back in oven for another ten minutes maybe to crisp the crumble again.
