A couple decades ago I caught a few Barenaked Ladies shows in Massachusetts, and one of the things they had going even back in the aughts was a setup to record and master the entire show to 320kbps MP3 straight from the board mix, slicing it into individual song files and populating the ID3 tags along the way, so by the time the encore was over and people were starting to slowly head towards the doors, they were duplicating a “golden master” USB stick of that night’s show as MP3s across a couple dozen USB ports simultaneously, over and over, ready to sell them to folks leaving for like ten bucks or whatever.

Using a very similar process model and leveraging some 2020s common-ish tech, I could see a small scrappy team of race fans stationing themselves at all the spicy spots of a particular race course armed with nothing more than their phones, shooting short video of any action that happens in front of them, while syncthing syncs that folder on their phone over an encrypted overlay network like tailscale or wireguard or zerotier to a laptop that’s also running kdenlive while the laptop’s user, the producer, is assembling the clips into the timeline and adding titles as the clips come in.

By the time the race is over, a dozen people have produced a professional looking polished piece of media showing off all the highlights of a race that only ended moments before, uploaded to peertube and ready to distribute on USB to attendees exiting parking lots on their way home.

I have MP3s of a Crowded House show I saw in Springfield, MA about 18(!) years back. They did a similar thing, but the flash drive got mailed to you a couple of weeks later.

Also: in the days of the Napster lawsuit, they put out their lead single on the filesharing networks with a little, "Fooled you! This is the commercial for our new album" voiceover. It was novel enough that I heard it on Toronto radio.
