@cstross it's a way of ensuring that white western Zionists are more likely to be accepted than poor brown people. They're not allowed to forcibly sterilise incomers like they did with previous brown Jews (Ethiopian, IIRC).

Most countries' birth rates are now below replacement rate without immigration, which means shrinking workforces / consumers / economy.
Not very famously, the U.S. (where I am) hit ZPG circa 1970.
For this reason alone, restricting immigration further than in the past is a special kind of madness.
The Israeli stance on religion is dismaying on the one hand, but I can see why it's controversial there. I just believe in "separation of church and state".

@WiteWulf Israel is *explicitly* a Jewish state. Always has been. What's different is that Judaism is both a religion and an ethnicity, and the government is firmly in the hands of the religious right.
It's essentially been taken over by the Jewish equivalent of Christian Nationalists from the USA.
@cstross yeah, I totally get all that. Their government does not seem to want the religion part of it to be optional for its prospective citizens, though. Because it’s harder for any power to justify its actions when the populace doesn’t just accept “God/Yhwh/Allah told me to do it”.
And how long before those who “aren’t Jewish enough” start getting encouraged to leave? 😳
