Put a book and lunch pail on my 12 year old's backpack. She managed to forget the lunch but bring the book. So, you see some behaviors really are genetic.

When I was a kid I used to pack boardgames for vacation that I wouldn't get around to playing. As an Adult, I now pack books I won't get around to reading.
@ZachWeinersmith A couple of weeks ago I set three books out to take on vacation with me, but there were complications with getting away, and the books remained on the kitchen table.
Thank goodness for my little Kobo! In the departure lounge I bought two of them as ebooks and managed to read both while we were away. One of the few pleasant things about flying is being able to immerse oneself in a good book.
