Sure!
In book 6 of the Merchant Princes series I threw an entire nuclear war to kill off more than half of the cast. And in book 5 of the Laundry files, The Rhesus Chart*, I killed off our main protagonist's mentor and a few of his friends. Hell, in *Glasshouse*, a first-person present-tense narrative, I killed the viewpoint protagonist two thirds of the way in!
