This is definitely true, and while the most prominent search engines have definitely contributed to their own enshittification, I’m not sure it wouldn’t have happened anyway.
There is more inequality and noise in bigger systems, and the web that Google crawls (and now more overtly steals) is orders of magnitude larger than before they removed “don’t be evil” from their self-proclaimed trajectory
